Spotlight on French Jazz#4 at International Vancouver Jazz Festival

In partnership with TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the Embassy of France in Canada, Institut Français, and the Consulate General of France in Vancouver presented Spotlight on French Jazz #4.

Spotlight on French Jazz is a program that highlights new French Jazz scene at jazz festivals throughout Canada between mid June and mid July. The festivals gather over 3,000,000 jazz enthusiastics!

2015 brought a very eclectic and surprising programming to the festival, with a focus on instrumental and vocal jazz.

This edition featured Cyrille Aimée, Céline Bonacina, Airelle Besson & Nelson Veras, Benoit Delbecq with François Houle, Gordon Grdina and Kenton Loewen that all performed at the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival from June 18th to July 1st.

Cyrille Aimée

As a curious child in Samois-sur-Seine, she would sneak out of her bedroom window to wander into the nearby gypsy encampments filled with those attending the annual Django Reinhardt Festival. She quickly fell in love with gypsy music and way of life; years later she would sing on street corners with friends while traveling across Europe.

Céline Bonacina

Nguyên Lê on Céline Bonacina: ”I couldn’t keep myself from admiring the vitality and beauty of Céline’s music and the rich expressiveness of her playing. This young woman has the strong urge to break through the confines of the genre just to be herself. This character trait probably made her to choose such a powerful instrument to play. During the time we spend together working on this album, I constantly got to know new facets of her artistic personality. What a contrast that lies between her delicate appearance, her gentle as impish nature and the passion in each of her tones”.

Airelle Besson

Forming an ongoing duo with Brazilian guitarist Nelson Veras, she has carefully paired two instruments that do not necessarily seem like they would match each other well. The result is music with its own unique combination of composition and tonal texture.
