Excerpts from the daily press briefing by Bernard Valero, French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman (Paris, 9th May 2012)

Syria

What’s your reaction to the attack on observers in Syria ?

We strongly condemn the attack against the convoy led by General Robert Mood, head of the observer mission in Syria.

The security and the integrity of the mission must be scrupulously respected, as stipulated by UN Security Council resolutions 2042 and 2043. The Syrian authorities’ primary responsibility is to guarantee this security while ensuring the mission’s full freedom of movement.

We hold the Damascus regime responsible for the safety of the observers.

Situation of the Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in Israel

We’re extremely concerned by the rapidly deteriorating health of several Palestinian prisoners who have gone on hunger strike in Israel.

For humanitarian reasons, we urge the Israeli authorities to be sensitive to the risk of a tragic outcome and to take appropriate action as a matter of urgency.

I want to reaffirm that on a number of occasions we’ve expressed - in a national capacity and with our European partners - our concerns to the Israeli authorities. We also underscored that administrative detention should remain an exception, be of limited duration and be used in compliance with fundamental guarantees, notably the rights of defense of the detainee and the right to a fair trial within a reasonable period of time.

We are continuing to closely monitor developments in the situation.

Elections in Serbia (May 6, 2012)

Serbia held presidential, parliamentary and local elections on May 6. France commends the successful organization and smooth conduct of these elections both in Serbia and in Kosovo, where Serbs with dual nationality were also able to participate in the Serbian parliamentary and presidential elections thanks to the OSCE’s support.

France commends the OSCE for its mobilization which enabled it to make a decisive contribution to the organization of this ballot.

We hope that the second round of these elections can also take place under the best possible conditions
