Excerpts from the daily press briefing by Bernard Valero, French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’spokesman (Paris, 15th June 2012)

Syria – Istanbul meeting

The opposition meeting taking place today in Istanbul had been agreed upon at the informal consultation meeting on Syria on June 6 and is fully in line with the forthcoming meeting of the Friends of the Syrian People group in Paris on July 6.

This meeting forms part of the efforts of the Syrian opposition - notably the SNC - to organize itself and come together around a common vision of the Syria of tomorrow in accordance with the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people.

France, which fully supports these efforts, as Mr. Laurent Fabius reaffirmed during a telephone conversation with the new leader of the SNC, Mr. Abdelbaset Sieda, at the beginning of the week, will be represented by our Ambassador of France to Syria, Mr. Eric Chevallier.

Syria – Means of communication with the Syrian rebels (Fabius)

In light of the crimes being committed on a daily basis by Bashar al-Assad’s regime against the Syrian people, the victims of the crackdown and the populations in the various neighborhoods and cities of Syria who are living under siege need to be able to communicate among themselves and with the outside world, and to be able to bear witness to their suffering. The world must be made aware of the horrors taking place in Syria. Nothing could be worse than a massacre behind closed doors.

In addition, hundreds of thousands of Syrians are continuing to risk their lives to mobilize peacefully in support of a free and democratic Syria. They deserve our wholehearted support.

The E3+3 and Iran will meet again in Moscow on June 18, as agreed at their previous meeting in Baghdad. The meeting in Moscow represents a new opportunity for Iran to respond to the comprehensive proposals made by the Six in Baghdad. This is an opportunity that should not be missed if Iran is sincere about its willingness to negotiate. The E3+3 group, for its part, is ready to do so. The group will again present a united front in Moscow and is determined to promote a diplomatic solution to this crisis in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council and the IAEA Board of Governors.
