ONC Innovation Centre Visit to Brest
The ONC Innovation Centre is a Centre of Excellence in Commercialization and Research (CECR) focused on Ocean Science and Technology industry in Canada.
The ONC Innovation Centre provides expertise to commercialize technologies and create industry/academic partnerships in Canada and around the world related to Smart Ocean Systems. Smart Ocean Systems are a combination of marine sensor technologies, digital infrastructure and ocean analytics that provide information for decision making.
The ONC Innovation Centre also provides connections to a national network of ocean science and technology organizations through the Ocean Technology Alliance Canada which is a partnership of regional industry associations including Ocean Industries BC, Technopole maritime du Quebec, the Ocean Tech Council of NS and Oceans Advance. At the NCE AGM in March, 2014 CECRs were introduced to the SATT (société d’acceleration du transfert de technologie) program in France and encouraged to seek possible collaboration opportunities.
Close connections already exist between the Brest region and the Rimouski region in Quebec, particularly through the two Technopoles. Establishing connections between other Canadian ocean science and technology clusters would strengthen both the Canadian and French sectors. Strong collaboration between French and Canadian academics already exists, particularly between IFREMER and ONC. The encounters with other institutions such as Technopole Brest Iroise, Sea Test Base, University of Brest, IFREMER, University of Western Britanny, European University of Brittany, SATT Ouest Valorisation, IUEM, Labex Mer, Mappem, Sabella or Quiet Ocean has definitely participated to open the path to further sustainable collaborations.
