Mandate of the cultural office

The cultural office of the Consulate general of France in Vancouver is in charge of developing cultural, educational and artistic relations and exchanges between France and Western Canada, under the general supervision of the cultural department of the French Embassy in Canada, based in Ottawa.

Encouraging dialogue and partnerships between peers, improving the participation of French artists and ideas in local events and festivals, promoting a constructive debate around the main issues of our times, are among our top priorities.

Our mandate is related to the international dissemination of contemporary French creation and cultural industries, specifically regarding the visual arts, digital arts and cinema ; support to the circulation of French thought and ideas ; development of French language in relation with the Alliances françaises and French-speaking schools supported by the French government ; promotion of higher education in France. The cultural office of the Consulate general of France in Vancouver is competent for the following provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, North-West Territories, Saskatchewan and Yukon.

Support provided to Canadian partners includes advice and expertise, networking with French partners and institutions, as well as financial support. For 2011-2014, the following priorities are being considered:
1/ Developing exchanges and increasing networking between Canadian and French arts and culture professionals.
2/ Setting up residency programs for French artists and curators in Western Canada and developing long-term partnerships between French and Canadian institutions (lecture series …).
3/ Supporting invitation of artists, writers, directors, thinkers and other French arts and culture personalities to Western Canada.

Visual arts as well as the creative and digital industries are the most emphasized sectors in terms of cooperation.

These priorities are implemented in relation with the Institut français, a national agency supported by the French Ministry of Foreign and European affairs for promoting French culture abroad (see www.institutfrancais.com). The Institut français regularly releases calls for projects in order to support the presentation of French artists abroad. Canadian institutions are encouraged to apply (either in French or English), and to keep the cultural office informed of their application.

Any request for support or collaboration must be presented well in advance. Please note that our programming takes place at the end of each calendar year (until Nov. 15) for projects occurring the following year.

The cultural office is closely connected to the following institutions, also supported by the French government, and which act as dissemination points for French culture and language in Western Canada.
