International Criminal Justice Day

July 17, we celebrate International Criminal Justice Day and the 11th anniversary of the entry into force of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. This court, which was so innovative when it was established, now plays a key role on the international stage; it is the only permanent court with universal jurisdiction competent to prosecute alleged perpetrators of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

France actively contributed to the creation of the International Criminal Court and is fully committed to its universalization.

International Criminal Justice Day enables us today to encourage the states that are not yet parties to the Rome Statute to accede to it and to adapt their legislation to this international instrument.

It also provides an opportunity to again urge states to fully cooperate with the court in the investigations and proceedings that it has launched. Indeed, France is convinced that international justice is, throughout the world, one of the foundations of lasting peace.
