French official statements : Paris, 8/07/13
Excerpts from the daily press briefing by Philippe Lalliot, French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman (Paris, 8th july 2013)
Argentina – Sentencing of those responsible for the murder of Marie-Anne Erize
On July 4, Argentina’s courts sentenced three people responsible for the illegal detention and disappearance of our compatriot, Marie-Anne Erize in San Juan on October 15, 1976, to life imprisonment, and 4 others to harsh sentences. Mr. Jorge Olivera, the intelligence officer at the time, and the other defendants were convicted of arbitrary arrests, acts of torture and the murder of some 60 people in the province of San Juan during the military dictatorship.
France again commends the determination of Argentina’s courts to bring justice to the victims of the dictatorship and their families, as well as its commitment to successfully completing the remembrance efforts undertaken since the repeal of the amnesty laws in 2003.
Our Consul General in Buenos Aires was present alongside the Erize family - with whom our embassy has always remained in regular contact - when the verdict was announced. The French authorities thereby wished to demonstrate their interest in the proceedings against those responsible for the atrocities committed during that period.
France reaffirms its attachment to the fight against impunity, to the right to justice and truth, and welcomes the excellent cooperation between France and Argentina in the fight against impunity and the protection of human rights. Our two countries are currently waging a joint campaign to promote the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, which entered into force in December 2010 on our joint initiative.
Nigeria – Attack against the high school in Mamudo (July 6, 2013)
We were extremely shocked to learn of the terrorist operation targeted against the high school in Mamudo, in Yobe state, which killed many students.
France condemns this heinous and cowardly act.
In these tragic circumstances, France reaffirms its commitment to the fight against terrorism and its solidarity with the Nigerian government and people in the face of this terrible ordeal.
