Egypt ; India : French official statements ( Paris, August 14 2013)

Excerpts from the daily press briefing by Vincent Floreani, French MFA’s deputy spokesman (Paris, 14 August 2013)

Egypt

France utterly deplores the violence which occurred in Cairo during the crowd-clearance operations. It extends its condolences to the bereaved. It is essential for this violence to stop and for calm to prevail. France calls on the parties to show the utmost restraint and cautions against disproportionate use of force.

As Foreign Minister M. Laurent Fabius highlighted a few days ago to the Egyptian authorities and his interlocutors in the region, the crisis can be resolved only through a peaceful solution, which requires everyone to give priority to dialogue and the quest for a compromise.

India

France was saddened to learn of the accident that just occurred aboard an Indian navy submarine in Bombay.

France offers its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims. The foreign minister wrote to his Indian counterpart, Salman Khurshid, to express France’s solidarity.
